Quick Answer: For the European Union market, you need four mandatory certificates: CE, CB, RoHS, and ErP. For the Middle East and Africa markets, CE plus CB are usually accepted. For South America, you may need local certifications like INMETRO in Brazil or IRAM in Argentina. Always verify that the certificate covers your exact model and voltage, not just the factory name.
Certifications Required by Market
| Market Region | Required Certifications | Important Notes |
|---|---|---|
| European Union (27 countries) | CE + CB + RoHS + ErP | ErP energy label mandatory since 2019; notified body certificates required |
| Middle East (GCC) | CE + CB | SASO certification required for Saudi Arabia; ESMA for UAE |
| Africa | CE + CB | SONCAP for Nigeria; PVoC for Kenya and other countries |
| South America | Local certification | INMETRO (Brazil), IRAM (Argentina), SEC (Chile) |
| Southeast Asia | CE + CB | TIS (Thailand), SIRIM (Malaysia), SNI (Indonesia) |
| Australia / New Zealand | SAA / RCM | Electrical safety approval required separately |
5 Questions to Ask Your Factory
1. Do you have a CE certificate for my specific model? - Some factories only have CE for one model and claim it covers all. Ask for the certificate PDF and check the model number list on the certificate itself.
2. Is the CB test report issued by a notified body? - Genuine CB reports come from accredited laboratories like TUV, SGS, Intertek, or UL. Self-declared factory reports are not accepted by customs authorities.
3. Do you have a RoHS declaration and test report? - RoHS restricts lead, mercury, cadmium, and other hazardous materials. Most EU importers require this document for customs clearance and retail compliance.
4. Can you show the ErP energy label? - ErP (Energy-related Products Directive) sets minimum energy efficiency standards. Products without ErP certification cannot be legally sold in the EU market.
5. Are certificates valid and up to date? - Check the issue date and expiry date on each certificate. Outdated or expired certificates are worthless and may cause your shipment to be held at customs.
Common Certification Pitfalls to Avoid
Many new importers make the mistake of trusting factory claims like "we have CE" without verifying. In reality, some factories have certificates for completely different product categories, or the certificate has expired years ago. Always ask for scanned copies and, if possible, verify the certificate number with the issuing body.
Another common issue: the certificate covers only one voltage version (for example, 220V 50Hz), but you need 110V 60Hz for your market. Each voltage version may require separate testing and certification. This is an expensive mistake to discover after production is complete.
Also watch out for "certificate sharing" - where a trading company uses a factory's certificate without authorization. Always confirm that the certificate holder name matches the actual manufacturer.
